Detailed Walkthrough
This quest for whatever unknown reason has two variations and is probably the only one that does.
The first step is to talk to the chief - Gintonic Icelump. Got to wonder about this guy's parents naming their offspring after an adult beverage. After you've picked yourself up from the floor, make your way to the map marker. Once you've made it to the target area, you'll get a message that this location matches the clue left behind by the chief.
Go inside the cave and kill all rodents.
This is where the quest forks. The single player quest has a different chess board and a different goal than the multiplayer version.
- Single Player
When you walk in, you will note there are a lot of pieces on the chess board. Some have exclamation points overhead. If you check your minimap, you'll see one piece on the row closest to you has a circle around the ! mark. It's the right hand rook. When you click on it, you'll see the screen flash, the door to the treasure chamber is open and you're able to go inside. Do so. When you get there you'll find a Treasure Cluster (the box with the bottles and such attached to it) that will drop some goodies. Off to the right side, there will also be a book. When you pick it up, you'll get a message that this quest is complete. The book is called "My 59 Memorable Games" and is a bit of an Easter Egg. Bobby Fischer, one of the best chess players of the 20th century, had a book titled "My 60 Memorable Games". The chessboard layout for this quest is also based on the winning move of one of those games.
- Multiplayer
When you get inside, the first thing you'll notice is that there are only three pieces on the board. You will see a male Orc, a female Orc and a wild boar. The solution to this is to talk to the male Orc. He will have the circle surrounding his ! mark. Talk to him and the quest complete indicator will go off and three Orc Ghosts will spawn. Talking to the other two will likewise spawn 3 Orc Ghosts. If you look at your log and you talked to the male Orc first, the log should report the quest being completed successfully.

Notes
As for why there was such a radical change to the quest between single and multiplayer modes - It is probably due to the fact that only one party need click on the rook to complete the quest. Other characters in your party wouldn't have anything to do. But by spawning 9 ghosts, everyone has a chance at some points.
