Akebono Tarō is an American ex patriot who was born Chad Rowan in 1969 in the state of Hawaii. He became enamored with the sport of sumo wrestling and went to Japan to compete. In 1995, he became a Japanese citizen and changed his name to Akebono Tarō.
He's best known in Sumo circles as the first foreign born wrestler to achieve the title of Yokozuna - the highest level in Sumo wrestling. He retired in 2001 after an 8 year reign as a Yokozuna.
