Usage Strategies
When Spider Arrow hits, it summons several tiny spiders (number dependant on CA level) that jump on to the target and/or any nearby monsters & start biting them. As the spiders do the damage, none of the mods on your character (Life Leach, +Magic Find, +damage, etc) have any effect. The spiders do very low damage individually, though they do attack quite quickly & if you combine this CA with Multi Shot (good for # of spiders, very, very bad for lag in MP) you can get vaguely reasonable damage in total. The spiders level is capped to your level, so there's not much point in having this CA more than ~1/5 your level. After the initial target is killed, the spiders drop to the ground & will attack a nearby monster, though they don't live for long if they're not attacking. You can kill dragons with this (& MS), as the dragon will try to back away to be able to hit the spiders, but rarely gets far enough to be able to hit them, so it slowly dies will backing away from the spiders.
Vampires can use Awaken Dead on the spiders to resurrect them, though why you'd want to is a different kettle of fish.
Cast Multi Shot, fire at monster, wait for monster to die. If you're after a single monster, get in close to get the maximum number of SA to hit it, if you're attacking a mob, you can fire from further away & hit several members of the mob to distract them & split the mob up.
While Life Leach doesn't work, the monsters hit by SA will immediately re-target from you to the spiders, so it's a fairly "safe" CA to use, unless you grab several mobs.
Pros and Cons
Pros
- The damage this Combat Art inflicts is not resisted by any monster in the game.
- The spiders distract the target monster & it stops attacking you.
- Dragons back away to try & get a melee hit against the spiders, but they're too close, so it rarely hits them.
Cons
- Massive lag when used with Multi Shot against a dragon (since they take so long to die & you'll end up with ~10-30 SA worth of spiders attacking the dragon).
- No mods appear to affect Spider damage, & the likes of life leach & Magic Find are of no use as it's not you doing the damage/killing.
- After the spiders die, they clog up the ground while you're holding down the Alt-key to pick stuff up.
