Sockets are features available on some equipment, allowing for the insertion of special items into that equipment. They are shown as little boxes in the lower left corner of the item image in your inventory and on the description. Items can be inserted either by a Blacksmith or by a Dwarf with the Forge Lore skill. The items that may be inserted are:
