Jonas claims that he handed some money he had been saving to a merchant in order to buy a few sweets for his sister. But that the merchant, Jonas (no relation to the boy) simply pocketed the money and told the boy to go away. Stealing from kids is a pretty low thing to do so you head over to the merchant to hear his side of the story.
