Ascaron and other self-references

The name of King Aarnum is based on Aarne Jungerberg, the game's designer. The name of the Raane set is also an anagram of Aarne.

Ascaron's Call is the name of the big tavern in Braverock, in that tavern you can see Ascaron's logo.

There is a gravestone with the epitaph "Here lies A. R. Malion", Armalion is a game that was being developed by Ikarion, the assets of that game were used as the basis for making Sacred.

Multiple gravestones have the names of people who participated in the development of the game or in the official forums of the game, the most remarkable are:

• Thain's Tomb: You can reach this tomb from a hidden path north of Mascarell, near that tomb you can find a Thain's Axe of Flames. This tomb was added with Sacred Plus and its gravestone in the German version of the game says "In Memoriam, Ralf Heinrich Oberhäuser * 27.02.1962 + 09.11.2003".
• Thorwyn's Tomb: This tomb is well known because it drops the Thorwyn's Club. In the English version of the game, the gravestone says "Here lies Crackseed after making fun of a certain Admin", Crackseed was a member of the official English Sacred forum.
• The Cave of Heroes: This cave is located in one of the Pirate Isles the gravestones in the cave have the name of members of the official sacred forums. They also release powerful mobs.

Game boxes are some items that can be found in the game and have no use, they are a tribute to some videogames created by the company Ikarion. Ikaron was developing Armalion, but they went bankrupt. Some of the developers ended up working for Askaron and used some of the resources originally made for Armalion to create Sacred.

Arthurian legends

In Bellevue there is a sword stuck in a rock. By interacting with it you can read "I'll be back. A.", this sword in suposed to be Caliburn.

The name DeMordrey is probably a reference to Mordred, and Morgast is a reference to Morgause.

The name of the Relmin set is an anagram of Merlin.

Babylon 5

There is a hidden path in the Dryad Forest which leads to a cave with a Shadow Vessel and the text "If you go to Zhadum you will die".

Bugs Bunny

There is a gravestone that says "Unlike Bugs Bunny, Savior was too inept to fool Elmer the Wabbit slayer".

Diablo

To the north of Gloomoor there is a town that is a recreation of Tristram from Diablo,

There is a gravestone that says "Here lie A'Ndariel, Du'Riel, Mephistopheles, Di'Abilo and Ba-al (please do not open)".

Dune

The name of the item Muadib's Visions is a clear reference to Muad'dib, who also happens to have visions of the future.

Doom

Seraphim's skill BeeEffGee is a reference to the BFG-9000 from the Doom series. It even uses the same sounds as that weapon.

Dungeons and Dragons

The name of the Blackstaff set is a reference to the nickname of Khelben Arunsun from Forgotten Realms, who was the Lord Mage of Waterdeep.

Eragon

The name of the orc Urgalook is a reference to the urgals, which are creatures similar to orcs.

Jason

West of Drakenden there is a hidden path that leads to some rocks stacked in a way that spells the name "Jason", near them there are two unique items: Hockey Mask and Battered Machete.

Kill Bill

There is an item called Bill Killer.

Lovecraft

One of the characters you must to kill in the Bounty Hunt series quest is called Azathot, named after Azathoth.

In the Underworld Campaign, the player has to fight several guardians of Captain Vernon's necklace. One of them is called Shub-Naggurith, named after Shub-Niggurath, and another is Nyarlothatep, named after Nyarlathotep.

In the Underworld Campaign, after reaching the Dryad Forest, you have to kill a demon called Hoth-Yotsog, named after Yog Sothoth.

Mal-Orc-A

South of Aish-Jadar you can take a boat to this Island, named after Mallorca. On that island there is a sidequest called The Holiday Makers, which rewards you with sunglasses for your character.

Marx Brothers

In Silver Creek, the three soldiers fighting the minotaur are called Harpo, Groucho and Chico.

Monty Python

The Fist of the Gods skill has a chance of playing the "Hallelujah!" sound upon using, much like Monty Python's famous Holy Hand Grenade.

The Rune Stone of the Dancing Dead, located at the Battle Mage's starting point of the Ancarian campaign can summon aggressive rabbits, there are also other rabbits like that at Mystdale Castle, these appear to be based on the Rabbit of Caerbannog.

Music

There is a gravestone that says "Elvis".

The name of the item Designer 'It's A Kind of Magic' Shades is a reference to the song "A Kind of Magic" from Queen.

The name of the item Designer 'Stairway to Heaven' Shades is a reference to the song "Stairway To Heaven" from Led Zeppelin.

The name of the item Designer 'Stranger in the Night' Shades is a reference to the song "Strangers in the Night" from Frank Sinatra.

Pac-Man

West of Faeries Crossing there is a hidden path that leads to a cave which has a design similar to a PacMan level, with ghosts and balls that give experience.

Pirates Of The Caribbean

One of the quest-giving pirates is called Jak Arrow, referencing the famous pirate Jack Sparrow.

Pong

In the Dryad Forest there is a portal that is only activated after you defeat Anducar in single player, this portal leads to a cave where you can play Pong.

Star Trek

Some NPCs say "Why do Elves get upset when I hold up one hand like this and say 'Prosper and live long'?"

Star Wars

The ice elves use light sabers.

The character Glubba is based on Jar Jar Binks.

Teletubbies

There is a gravestone that says "Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa Laa, Po to hell with you!!!".

The Matrix

The name of the item Designer 'Neo's Reallity' Shades is a reference to Neo.

The Terminator

The name of the item Designer 'T-IXVMM' Shades is a reference to the movie The Terminator, the names of the terminators models are written with a "T" and a hyphen followed by a number, IXVMM is the roman number for 1984, the year the movie was released.

Sometimes Gladiator will say "Hasta la vista, baby!" referencing Terminator 2.

Tolkien

Sacred has been influenced by Tolkien's work and has a lot of references to it.

The Dark Elf's set Ethan-Rhys looks like the armor of the elves in the battle against Saurom at the start of the first movie of the trilogy.

The name of the Goilomn Gilisfon set is an anagram of Gimli son of Gloin.

The name of the item The One Ring of All is a reference to the ring from The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The water form bonus is probably a reference to the power of that ring.

Dungolianth's Poisonous Stinger is based on Ungoliant, a big spider from The Silmarillion.

Arogarn the Forest Ranger is a character that you can find in Bellevue, he is based on Aragorn.

The Shaddar'Rims are based on the Nazgûl.

Thorwyn's name is a reference to the dwarf Thorin from The Hobbit, Thorwyn is sometimes mistaken for a dwarf.

The death of Shaddar not being able to control the power of Ilith'Bah and then returning from the death may be based on Gandalf dying fighting the Balrog and then returning as Gandalf the White.

One of the Dwarf sayings "Of course! A dwarf needs no fellowship for quests like these" is a reference to The fellowship of the ring.

Two characters, the dragon Loromir and Bogomir (who you must to kill in the Bounty Hunt series quest), have a name suspiciously similar to Boromir.

Warhammer

Stampfa, the god of goblinoids is a reference to the Ork Stompa war machine from Warhammer 40.000, which is called "Stampfa" in German.
