Usable Item Level
Characters can not use items that have too high a level. The usable item level depends on the level of the character. A level 40 character, for example, can not equip items that have level 53 or more.
A character equipping a piece of armor who's level is higher than the character's own will result in a movement speed penalty. This penalty is reduced through use of Armour Lore, essentially increasing the character's level for the purpose of equipping gear with no penalty.
Equipping a weapon or shield that has a level higher than your own will result in an attack speed penalty. This penalty is reduced through one of the six specific Weapon Lores:
